The Perioperative Educator/Registered Nurse performs the dual role of being an OR Nurse and also functions as a staff resource and as a clinical liaison to the Education Services Department. The Perioperative Educator mentors and provides resources while a staff nurse and also provides clinical education to the staff as assigned.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates the ability in teaching/learning process to improve clinical practice in all perioperative departments.
  • Coordinates, schedules and evaluates unit based orientation for new employees in all perioperative departments.
  • Assures compliance with orientation policies and procedures in all perioperative departments.
  • Facilitates staff education for unit based competency and hospital wide mandatory education in all perioperative departments.
  • Functions as a leader, role model and mentor in all departments within perioperative.
  • Completes and submits documentation of educational programming. Maintains unit records in each department.
  • Demonstrates expertise in areas of clinical practice as required for perioperative nursing.
  • Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
  •  Provides and maintains a safe environment for the perioperative patient as addressed in the Hospital Policy and Procedure Manuals and in AORN Standards and Recommended Practices.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in aseptic technique.
  • Identifies needed supplies and equipment to prepare OR suite for patient care. Inspect OR suite to determine if it is clean and equipment is in readiness for the procedure.
  • Determines that the consent is on the chart and indicates the correct procedure.
  • Determines that the patient is properly identified.
  • Initiates and maintains correct sponge, needle, and instrument counts as identified in the OR Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Identifies and prepares the incision site according to established procedures.
  • Anticipates and fulfills the needs of the surgical team.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sit up to 2 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Stand for up to 10 hours per day; 8 hours at a time. Walk 6 hours per day; 10 minutes at a time. Must have hand/finger dexterity to manipulate and/or hold steady surgical instruments for the length of the surgical procedure.. Consistently lift, carry and push objects up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lifts, carries, or pushes objects up to 75 lbs. Transports patients weighing up to 400 lbs. in a wheelchair, bed or stretcher. Frequently stoop and bend. Frequently reach above shoulder level. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color, and peripheral vision. Depth perception necessary. Ability to tolerate visual monotony.

EDUCATION:

Registered nurse with current license to practice in the state of New Jersey is required. Masters in Nursing and/or Nursing Education preferred.  Candidates holding a BSN will be considered with commitment to and evidence of enrollment in MSN program.  Candidates who do not currently have a BSN will also be considered with commitment to and evidence of enrollment in BSN program followed by MSN program.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

3 years of current clinical perioperative nursing experience is required. Specialty certification appropriate to the area of assignment. Experience as a preceptor preferred. Must have the ability to work in a changing environment.
